Today we welcomed Kurihara-sensei of CRASH Japan and Campus Crusade for a seminar on disaster readiness. The 311 tragedy and recent volcanic activity in Japan has made us more aware of the need to be prepared for an earthquake/tsunami event that could affect large parts of Kanto.

Completely avoiding a disaster may be impossible, but it is good to consider how to reduce the size of the disaster in its affects on human lives through good preparation. Also, how we might serve both our church and community in the wake of a disaster.

Ultimately, we trust in the Lord for life and wellbeing, but we also prepare where we can. Thank you, Kurihara-sensei, for your good advice today. Spring Changes

Welcome to spring! Spring changes everything. Flowers grow, cherry blossoms bloom, and the earth turns green again. Spring clothing is taken out, children start a new school year, families move to new homes, and new jobs are begun. We welcome these changes with hope of good things to come.

Spring brings changes to our church, too. Pastor Kondo will be ending his good ministry on 3/22. I will serve in an interim pastoral role again while we continue to search for a Japanese pastor. We look toward the future with hope of what God will do in and through us as a church in the year ahead.

Easter brings changes, too. The ressurection changes everything. Hung on a cross, and put in the tomb, we see how much Christ loves us. His death shows the extent he is willing to go to guarantee our forgiveness. But the grave isn’t the end. He rose again! His ressurection changes the future hope for all of us. Because He lives, we no longer need to fear death because Christ broke its curse and power. Because He lives, we are promised eternal life in heaven someday. Because He lives, we know that nothing is impossible for God. He has power to bring life from death. And he has the power to bring hope to impossible situations. Because He lives, we can face tomorrow! We can look forward with hope at what He will do in and for us.

In some ways, Easter is more exciting than Christmas. Jesus is alive! Everything changes. This is cause for celebration! Come join us this Easter worship service or kids program on 4/5, and in the 2015 church year ahead. We look forward to welcoming you to our changing church family!

Once again, we worked in partnership with the 311 Network and Miyako Community Church. Mrs. U shared here calligraphy skills, leading two classes in two separate temporary housing areas. Participants enjoyed writing Bible verses and simple Japanese characters. We shared a delicious taco rice lunch with our team prepared.

In addition, we spent Sunday morning at Miyako Community Church. Pastor Kevin preached a message, and the team shared a special song. Pastor Iwatsuka lead us on a visit to the scenic shore of Taro, the fishing port, and the seawall broken by the tsunami.

We continue to pray for the ongoing Christian testimony shown in the temporary housing areas through the work of many volunteers, both in Japan and from abroad. Beads for Tohoku

(Scroll down for English)

One day I stumbled upon a prayer of Soren Kierkegaard. The words capture the essence of what God's love is really about:

"Father in Heaven! You have loved us first, help us never to forget that You are love so that this sure conviction might triumph in our hearts over the seduction of the world, over the inquietude of the soul, over the anxiety for the future, over the fright of the past, over the distress of the moment. But grant also that this conviction might discipline our soul so that our heart might remain faithful and sincere in the love which we bear to all those whom You have commanded us to love as we love ourselves.

You have loved us first, O God, alas! We speak of it in terms of history as if You have only loved us first but a single time, rather than that without ceasing You have loved us first many things and every day and our whole life through. When we wake up in the morning and turn our soul toward You - You are the first - You have loved us first; if I rise at dawn and at the same second turn my soul toward You in prayer, You are there ahead of me, You have loved me first. When I withdraw from the distractions of the day and turn my soul toward You, You are the first and thus forever. And yet we always speak ungratefully as if You have loved us first only once."

I've often thought of God's love as a past thing that occurred but once. But as Kierkegaard's prayer reminds us, God's love continues on in the present. Every day, every moment, God is right there with us, loving us first.

Thanks to Gregory and Ruth Hooper for a great gospel workshop on June 11!

"I didn't come to Japan to sing gospel." Ray Sidney says. We found out that was true this past Sunday. It was a joy to welcome Ray as a special guest singer. But we were sorry that he was suffering from a bad head cold and had nearly lost his voice.

Ray added, "If I came only to sing, then what should I do at times like this? I came to obey God who told me 'go and serve.'"

In spite of his cold, Ray sang a number of songs for both our 11am Morning Service and 3pm English CAFE. He also gave us a taste of a gospel workshop with a 20-minute mini workshop after the service.

Thanks, Ray, in spite of your physical limitations for coming to minister to us!Kevinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11365321447306305547noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5570975345553978544.post-69952652002671930512013-05-19T05:24:00.000-07:002013-05-19T05:24:13.796-07:00Save Your Fork

An elderly lady was diagnosed with a terminal illness. She began making arrangements for her own funeral. While planning with her pastor, she made an unusual request. She said, “After they place my body in the casket, I want them to put a fork in my right hand.” The pastor was puzzled. She explained, “Since I was a child, whenever we ate a big fancy meal with guests, someone would always say at the end: ‘The best is yet to come. Save your forks.’ I knew that meant that a delicious dessert would be brought out. There would be layered chocolate cake, or vanilla puddings, or juicy apple pies. After I thought everything was done, the best was ready for me. Now I am a dying old lady. But when people see me at my funeral with that fork in my hand, I want them to know that I was ready for the best that God has waiting for me. And I want you to tell them, ‘Save your fork. The best is yet to come.’”

The woman understood heaven. We should, too. What if every time you pick up a fork at a wedding reception you were to stop and think of heaven, and the wedding banquet to come there. Try it. If God only gave us life, forgiveness and strength to live in this world, that would be enough. But God has promised heaven to you, too. Let’s think about it. Let’s talk about it. Let’s thank him for it.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

(Scroll down for English)

A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art. When a war broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was notified and grieved deeply for his only son.

About a month later there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He said, “Sir, you don’t know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and he died instantly. He often talked about you, and your love for art.” The young man held out this package. “I know this ! isn’t much. I’m not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.” The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in awe at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture. “Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It’s a gift.”

The father hung the portrait over his mantle. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected. The man died a ! few months later. There was to be a great auction of his paintings. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their collection. On the platform sat the painting of the son. The auctioneer pounded his gavel. “We will start the bidding with this picture of the son. Who will bid for this picture?” There was silence. Then a voice in the back of the room shouted, “We want to see the famous paintings. Skip this one.” But the auctioneer persisted. “Will somebody bid for this painting. Who will start the bidding? $100, $200?”

Another voice angrily. “We didn’t come to see this painting. We came to see the Van Goghs, the Rembrandts. Get on with the real bids!” But still the auctioneer continued. “The son! The son! Who’ll take the son?” Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room. It was the longtime gardener of the man and his son. “I’ll give $10 for the painting.” Being a poor man, it was all he could afford. “We have $10, who will bid $20?” “Give it to him for $10. Let’s see the masters.” “$10 is the bid, won’t someone bid $20?” The crowd was becoming angry. They didn’t want the picture of the son. They wanted the more worthy investments for their collections. The auctioneer pounded the gavel. “Going once, twice, SOLD for $10!” A man sitting on the second row shouted, “Now let’s get on with the collection!” The auctioneer laid down his gavel. “I’m sorry, the auction is over.” “What about the! paintings?” “I am sorry. When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret stipulation in the will. I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time. Only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including the paintings. The man who took the son gets everything!”

God gave His son 2,000 years ago to die for us. Much like the auctioneer, His message today is: “The son, the son, who’ll take the son?” Because, you see, whoever takes the Son gets everything. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16) THAT’S LOVE!

Three of us from Denen Grace Chapel joined others from Ooyama Christ Church and local staff for three days of relief work in Miyako and Taro in Iwate prefecture (9/17~9/19). We worked under the ministry of Miyako Community Church and the 311 Network.
There are 69 locations of temporary housing with thousands still living in these places. We visited two locations during our time there.

When we arrived at the temporary housing location, we set up our cafe in the community room. Then, going door to door, we invited the residents to come and distributed some snacks or small gifts. We prepared a light meal that was waiting for them in the cafe: sandwiches, corn and potatoes. We served ice coffee and, as a special treat, shaved ice. When we weren't serving, we sat with the residents and listened and chatted with them.

We had a bit of a music program as well. This time we were joined by a talented harpist from Britain, who performed several folk songs as residents sang along. We also led them in some familiar hymns: "Amazing Grace" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus."

Many of the residents really enjoyed this time of eating, talking and singing together. Their circumstances continue to be a challenge to them, but we pray that we were able to demonstrate the love of Christ.Kevinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11365321447306305547noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5570975345553978544.post-38244968724993073952012-08-25T06:45:00.000-07:002012-08-25T06:45:51.071-07:00Loving Your Neighbor

Bill is the name of this wild-hair boy. Most of his T-shirts and jeans have holes and he seldom wears shoes. This brilliant and rather eccentric college student is laid back in his approach to life. Some would say he is lazy and sloppy while others would say he is focused and undistracted by the trivial things of life.

Recently, Bill became a Christian. The Christian fellowship he is attending is very informal and the atmosphere of these meetings is similar to that of a coffee house. The format of these meetings fits right in with his informal approach to life.

Across the street from his campus is a very formal conservative church. The people there are very influential and are well dressed. Although they desire to develop a ministry to help reach the college students, their formality has been a hindrance. One day Bill decided to visit the church, so he walks in with his normal attire. Since the service had already started, many eyes turn toward him as he walks in.

The church is completely packed and since he can't find a seat in the back, he walks further down the aisle. By now people are starting to feel uncomfortable with this unconventional wild-haired person. As Bill gets closer to the pulpit, he realizes there are no seats, so he sits down on the carpet. Although this is a common practice at the college fellowship he has been attending, he doesn’t realize this is not done at this church. By now the auditorium is totally silent and people are wondering what’s going to happen next.

The door in the back of the auditorium opens and everyone’s attention is drawn to the Deacon as he makes his way toward Bill. The distinguished Deacon, in his three-piece suit, walks slowly toward the boy. Everyone understands what this elderly man is going to do. It’s an unpleasant task, but it has to be done. There has to be dignity and order in a church service. Of course, everyone is wondering how this distinguished 80-year-old man is going to be able to communicate with this kid without hurting his feelings.

It takes a long time for the old man to reach the boy. The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man's cane. All eyes are focused on him. The air is filled with tension and anticipation. The minister can't preach the sermon until the Deacon does what he has to do. The Deacon drops his cane on the floor and with great difficulty he lowers himself down and sits next to Bill. To everyone’s surprise, the Deacon starts worshiping God with Bill so he won't be alone. Everyone is choked emotionally. After the minister gets his emotions under control he says, "What I'm about to preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget. This is what loving your neighbor means."Kevinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11365321447306305547noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5570975345553978544.post-25635056300675771732012-07-24T05:01:00.000-07:002012-07-24T05:01:33.192-07:00Congrats DGC! 10周年記念 感謝!

Congratulations, Denen Grace Chapel family. You did it. You’re a big 10 years old! But today is not really about us individually; it’s not about Denen Grace Chapel; it’s not about our successes, failures, future plans or past history. Today is about the head of this church—GOD. He is the one who declares by his Son, “I will build my church.” He is the architect and builder; He is the power behind all we do. Nehemiah, cupbearer turned builder, confessed the same. His work succeeded only because “because the gracious hand of my God was upon me” (Nehemiah 2:8). So today we celebrate God’s goodness, not ours. May He receive all the glory through this church!

A bit of hiking in the summer heat can be great exercise. Our Clay small group took on the challenge of 2000ft. Mt. Takao last week. Part of the group took the cable car to scenic overlook and monkey garden. We all gathered for cold noodles afterwards and enjoyed lunch together. Great climbing, everyone!

Our "Voices of Grace" gospel choir really practiced hard to learn the lyrics for many challenging songs. After 14 semesters of gospel choir practice at Denen Grace, they are not just the "Voices of Grace" but also the "Voices are great"! We were all very moved by their "Hosanna" rendition by Kirk Franklin. What a powerful song! God was gloried through song and words on Sunday.Kevinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11365321447306305547noreply@blogger.com
